It’s Friday night (or Wednesday, or Monday) and it’s pizza night! The best “no cook” night of the week. Once that delivery box hits your door you smell the sauce, cheese, and warm crust. It’s just as delicious as it appears. Family pizza night is an easy way to get everyone gathered around the table sharing a meal and talking about their day. For older kids and adults, a salad can be a great way to add vegetables to the meal. Veggies add tons of flavor, not many calories, loads of fiber, and nutrients which keep our bodies healthy. There are so many fun ways to add veggies to pizza and we’re exploring them!

DIY Pizza party

When it’s time for family pizza night, instead of ordering from your favorite local shop, try having a DIY pizza night. It’s a great way to let everyone have their own healthy pizza ideas.

  • Start by using pre-made dough or a pre-cooked crust. Even english muffins or pita bread works great. Try a whole grain crust.
  • Try different sauces. Use traditional red sauce, cheddar cheese sauce, cauliflower cream, olive oil, or barbecue sauce. Be as creative as you like.
  • Get ready to veggie. Grab pre-chopped veggies like broccoli, peppers, onions, carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms and let people pick what they top their pizza with. You can even try fruits, like apples and pineapples.
  • Try different proteins, like pre-cooked chicken, fish, steak, or even peanuts for a thai inspired pizza!

Pizza, especially when homemade, can be a great way to make healthy foods for kids. It’s easy to add new vegetables to a familiar food. Pizza is a great gateway food, opening the door to trying new foods.

There are plenty of other ways to have fun family meals and incorporate more veggies. Taco Tuesday may be a weekly tradition your family makes. If mixed dishes are cool with your picky kid, try this tasty and quick bean burrito. Healthy food for picky eaters doesn’t have to be boring. Familiar foods like hot dogs and meatballs can be paired with veggies and fruit for a tasty meal that will help your child grow and thrive.
